REPORT ON THE YOUNGEST MOUNT EVEREST CLIMBER OF HARYANA
On at Dhanbad Club our Rotaractors got a great chance of meeting an extremely inspirational personality SUNITA SINGH CHOKEN, the youngest woman from Haryana to climb the Mount Everest at the age of 25.
Recipient of "Nari Sakti Award 2016" Rewari native Sunita is also the brand ambassador of Haryana Government for the "Beti Bchao, Beti Padhao" campaign. In the event, Sunita shared her dreams and experiences. Scaling mountains became Sunita's quest while she was studying in school at her grandmother's place in Kishorpura, a village in Alwar district of Rajasthan. As the school was on hilly terrain, trekking and later scaling mountains became a practice. Coming from Gujjar community categorised under Other Backwards Classes, she waged a long struggle to make her dream come true.
Crossing the financial barriers and restrictions as a woman from a rural place, she completed the basic and advanced mountaineering courses in Manali and Darjeeling. These were followed by more expeditions as and she climbed 5 peaks in Uttarkashi, Manali Darjeeling. Sunita recently took another mission .This time with a noble cause of women empowerment, in which she did a 5000 k.m. solo cycling journey pan-India. Covering 5000 k.m. in 46 days form Kanyakumari to Kharadunga on her bicycle, she created awareness about, "Beti Bchao, Beti Padhao", campaign and the evils of child marriage, highlighting the needs to support girls education and the right to equal opportunity to them.
She also added one message for the youth is to never give up,
"Everything is possible."
