A very relevant topic of todays’ global scenario was discussed in Guru Nanak College, Dhanbad on 29th February 2020. It was 11th lecture of Guru Nanak Dev lecture series. The eminent speaker was Dr. Gurdeep Singh, a reputed professor from Department of Environmental Studies, IIT ISM Dhanbad, also former vice Chancellor of Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribagh. Dr. Singh has been a very decorated scholar of environmental studies who has been visiting professor in more than dozens of universities globally. He is a member of board of environment and conservation, Govt. Of India. He an advisor to the Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
This was one of the most interactive lectures in which the participation of students was exceptionally good. Dr. Singh talked about the growing challenges related to the environment and also he explored about the possible measures to solve the environmental issues.
He asked the students to participate and query their questions then he answered the students’ questions with great patience. The questions were mainly related to the very burning subject of the present day i.e., Corona virus, toilet cleanliness, Prime Ministers Swach Bharat Mission, pollution due to coal mines and excessive use of vehicles, global warming, use of solar energy and wind energy and lastly e-waste management.
He emphasised on changing the public mindset and making people more responsible towards their environmental duties to make the globe more liveable. To inspire the students, he quoted and exampled the famous personalities like Sachin Tendulkar, Bill Clinton, M. S. Dhoni, Arvind Kejriwal and few more.
The students also suggested their opinions for the cause. The discussion mainly circled towards the fact that in the era of globalization the peoples’ mindset and sense of responsibility can bring substantial changes.
The lecture started with the bouquet presentation to Dr. Singh followed by welcome address of Principal P. Shekhar. After the lecture, Dr. Singh was felicitated with Memento presented by Dr. Ranjana Das, Prof-In-Change Girls’ Wing. He was also decorated with shawl presented by Sardar Tejpal Singh, Chairman of Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee. Dr. Sanjay Prasad Prof-In-Charge Boys’ Wing proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. Varsha Singh compered the occasion and carried out the subject introduction.
Former secretary of the college Sardar D. S. Gill, Heads of departments, teachers non-teaching staffs and good number of students of the college attended the lecture and got benefitted.
