History

  • Department of English Guru Nanak College came into effect right from the inception of the college in the year 1970. It continues to offer teaching of English language and literature at +2 and Degree levels since then, under the aegis of Ranchi University, Ranchi.

    At present, it is affiliated to Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University, Dhanbad and is one of the most sought after Departments of English among students interested in pursuing English studies in this region. It caters to different tastes and needs of the students from time to time by teaching through conventional and ICT enabled methods, Communication skills in English classes, FOSS (Free and Open - source Software) Centre, a Spoken Tutorial Project by IIT, Mumbai, Language Laboratory and a rich Library with Internet facility. The classes of Communicative English and Computer literacy is a boon for the students as it makes them more employable. The Dept. focuses upon all-round development of its students by encouraging their active participation in Sports and Cultural activities. The students are also motivated to reach out to society through extension activities of N.S.S. and N.C.C.

    The Department is led under true guidance of Prof. P. Shekhar, the Principal of the college and Ex -Faculty member of the Dept. and by three full -time teachers along with two Guest teachers . The Dept. aims at not just on teaching texts and writing good answers but also on creating literary awareness. So, Seminars are organized, eminent speakers are invited, students are encouraged to contribute in Departmental Seminars, Workshops and read papers in day to day class. As and when possible, teachers of the Dept. guide students to make the best possible use of library that has a very good and rare collection of books and journals of national and international repute.

    Since parental guidance is compulsory, the Dept. organizes Parents teachers Meeting every year and invites guardians to interact with the teachers along with their wards.

Achievement

  • The Department has been able to place good record of academic results in almost every session since the beginning. In the session 2015-2018, a 99% result with 1st class was obtained. In the session 2016-2019, Vaishali Singh and Surabhi Kashyap became University toppers with 1st and 2nd ranks respectively.

  • 2nd lecture of Guru Nanak Dev Lecture Series organized by the Dept. on 24th January 2018.

  • Workshop on How to Read Poems organized by the Dept. on 3rd May 2019.

  • A National Seminar on Imagining the World : Literature, Philosophy, Myth and Reality organized by the Dept. on 27th & 28th July 2019.

    Besides, our students have been admitted to universities and colleges for advance studies over the years depending upon their areas of interest. And we are happy to mention that a number of our students excelled in their career and are proudly associated in Govt. Services, education, banking sector, national and multinational companies, print and electronic media and journalism, self employment and so on.
